I am not sure what you mean by within the plane as well as measuring..... You need to be looking at ASTM D5034 and 5035 for tensile strength depending on the beaking force you will need to be carefull with you selection of grips. There may be other methods available for the specific industry you are intending to supply too. Check in those sections of the ASTM committee\'s. If you want to look at the effiiciency of the needle punching look to test the peeling force possibly AATCC 136:2003. Alternatively contact INDA the non-wovens association in the USA for support.
